“The Scars Left Behind” Photo Project
As teenage suicide becomes more prevalent it became apparent that I had to create something with my photography to bring awareness to how bullying profoundly affects everyone, young and old. This series of portraits were created shortly after my daughter was rushed to the hospital for an overdose of over-the-counter drugs. That night, we also discovered she had been creating deep cuts on her arms and legs. Since the start of this project, my children have lost four close friends and a family member, all under the age of sixteen.
Teenagers are not mentally stable enough to appropriately cope with the nonstop assault of name calling and insults being thrown at them. Therefore, they surrender to depression, cutting, and in extreme cases suicide. These scars that are left behind in the subconsciousness of the mind will haunt them for the rest of their lives. The offending words often penetrate even the most mundane of activities until they reach a breaking point where there is no turning back.
Drawing inspiration from my own children who have been greatly impacted by the endless barrage of bullying allowed to occur in our public school system. I am giving a voice to those who have suffered as my children have. I asked each participant to write their most hurtful "bully" word on a board for the world to see and face the camera. Next, I asked them to think about how they felt when someone calls them this word. Looking at the images, you are immediately aware of their discomfort and can recognize the unforgiving pain in their eyes.
“Is it our destiny, as humans to scar and wound one another till the end of time? Or can we stop this insanity?”
