Gnomes
Fairytales and gnomes are near and dear to my heart. I spent quite a lot of time after my mother past at my grandmother’s house where a set of seven small dwarfs resided sitting patiently in front of the fireplace. My mother had made them with her own hands and this knowledge somehow gave them life. I would imagine them sneaking around the house at night getting into all kinds of mischief. These tiny little creatures reminded me of myself as I was very small and treated like I couldn’t do anything. However I knew different. I knew that I was smart and so were the dwarfs. I imagined them coming to life and spending every chance they could exploring the world around them. My artwork is an extension of my childhood bringing to life whimsical images of enchanted creatures in several forms of media including photography, mixed media paintings, and art books. Within this context I also use old newspaper and books, along with any other post-consumer paper stuffs inside my artwork as a commitment to recycling. Taking something that was going to the landfill and making it into something beautiful that can be cherished for a lifetime. |
